커피의 나라, 에티오피아

에티오피아에서 커피는 중요한 상품 중 하나입니다. 농부 그리고 정부 모두에게 중요한 소득원이기 때문입니다. 그래서 대부분 농부는 커피를 생산하거나 소비하기 위해 커피와 관련된 일을 하죠.

에티오피아의 커피 수확 시즌은 보통 11월부터 2월까지인데, 해당 지역의 기후나 고도에 따라서 그 시기는 차이가 있습니다. 예를 들어 고지대일수록 수확 시작이 늦어집니다. 꽃이 피고 열매가 성숙하기까지 시간이 더 오래 걸리기 때문입니다(약 11개월).

커피를 수확하는 시즌은 커피 외에 다른 작물을 저장하거나 판매하는 때이기도 합니다. 따라서 가족을 부양하기 위해 수익을 올릴 수 있는 가장 중요한 시기라고 할 수 있습니다.

Coffee is one of the most important commodities and income generating for both government and farmers. Because of this almost all farmers’ lives are related to coffee either in producing, buying for consumption or working on it. 

Ethiopian coffee harvesting starts from November to February that means it varies based on the climate and altitude of the area. Highland growers harvest lately and the maturity (from flowering to mature cherry) is longer, taking about 11 months. 

The months from November to February are a pick time to harvest coffee and also store other crops or time to sell the crops. Hence, it is one of the most important times to get income and help their families.


그들의 삶이 쉽지 않은 이유

에티오피아에서 커피 농부들과 피커들의 노동 강도는 상당히 높은 편입니다. 커피 외에도 다른 농작물을 함께 기르기 때문인데, 커피만으로는 수입이 충분하지 않아서 그렇습니다.

커피 수확기에는 일용직 노동자인 피커들을 고용합니다. 일당은 계약에 따라 달라지는데 보통 80-120 에티오피아 비르 정도입니다. 일당을 커피 체리로 주기도 합니다. 농장주가 현금이 충분치 않거나, 피커들이 원할 때입니다. 주로 피커들이 집에서 마실 커피가 필요한 경우죠. 역시 별도 협의를 하지만 피커들이 수확한 양의 15% 정도가 일반적입니다. 커피체리를 100kg을 수확했다면 15kg를 받는 것이죠.

Ethiopian coffee farmers and cherry pickers, are among the hardest working and most suffering people due to their hard work. Besides coffee production, almost all farmers grow other agricultural products (crops) to reduce expenses in buying other crops.

During the harvesting months the owner must hire daily workers for cherry picking. The payment is based on their agreement; it can be 80~120 Ethiopian birr per day or in some village’s coffee cherry. When the farm owner doesn’t have a cash money, he either shares a coffee cherry to the pickers or when the pickers need a coffee. Mainly when the pickers need for home drink, they get a cherry. On average and their agreement, the share is about 15% of what they collected, which means 15kg from 100kg they picked.



두 부류의 피커

커피 피커는 두 부류로 나뉘는데요. 하나는 마을 주변에 사는 사람들입니다. 이들은 가까이에 있기 때문에 아침에 일어나면 체리를 따러 가기 전까지 다른 일과를 하게 되죠. 반면 체리를 따기 위해 다른 마을이나 도시에서 오는 사람도 있습니다. 이들은 수확하는 동안 농장주가 마련해준 장소에서 머물며 일을 하게 됩니다.

There are two types of coffee pickers. The first are those who live around the community and the other are those who come from a distance (other village or town) only to pick cherries. Pickers from the same village wake up in the morning and keep their cattle for grazing or arrange some other work until they go for a picking. And those who come from far away, rest in the place given to them by the farm owner.
